Our Le Corbusier Grande Comfort sofa is a high quality reproduction of the original designed for the 1929 Salon d'Automne. It is a modern classic. This wide version of the Grand Comfort was intended to be a woman’s arm chair. To our knowledge, Le Corbusier was the only designer to have conceived of separate arm chairs for men and women. This model was put into production for the first time in 1959 by Mrs. Heidi Weber of Zurich. The prototypes of 1928-1929 of both models of the Grand Comfort were very informal with painted frames and soft bulging cushions. The intervention of Mrs Weber in 1959 conferred upon these models their present crisp, neat appearance.

As a pioneer of the Knoll Planning Unit, Florence Knoll created what she modestly called the "fill-in pieces that no one else wants to do." The perfect angle of repose. When the first tubular steel designs by Le Corbusier's studio appeared, they were described as "equipement de l'habitation" in keeping with the great architect's rational design philosophy. His famous chaise (1928), which he termed a "relaxing machine", visually communicates a dynamic design that allows one to continuously adjust the inclination for comfort when reading, napping or conversing. Smooth, naturally graphic haired-cowhide features unique markings of black, brown and white. Markings and color will vary with each piece.  

This was an idea that Mies developed in 1932. However, it was not put into production until well after his death. It was conceived as an alternative to the traditional wooden deck chair. The upper cross piece could be hooked on the ocean liner's deck railing. Mies also did drawings showing the frame suspended by a cord from a tree and from a hook in the ceiling. The curved base is one of the solutions presents in his drawings of the period. 

Le Corbusier Chaise Prototype

This is a reproduction of the very first version of the Chaise Longue of Le Corbusier. This was the version that Le Corbusier used in the Villa Church. Unlike the later versions, the upper carriage is not formed of what appears to be a continuously curving, unbroken line of tube supported by two arcs. In this prototype, the curved side bars are welded at the head and foot to a thicker straight tube. From a technical point of view, this solution can be considered more primitive in that it involves more handwork and less camplicated bending equipment. This upper carriage of the prototype could have conceivably been made by an artisan while it is highly improbable that the later version would have been attempled by a metal shop without fairly accurate mechanical equipment capable of both right and left hand bending. The base of the prototype was made with the same eliptical airplane tube as Le Corbusier’s famous table. A base made with ovoid airplane tube is also extant. It seems as though only a single example was made, the ovoid tube being rejected in favour of the eliptical tube. While the upper carriage of the prototype was modified to the continuous tube version present in the first Thonet France catalogue and in the production version shown at the Salon d’Automne of 1929, the eliptical tube base remained unchanged until 1959 when it was modified by Heidi Weber. Le Corbusier was notoriously thrifty and had the habit of recycling his prototypes. Just as one of the Grand Confort prototyped was later forced upon a somewhat reluctant client, Raul Le Roche, one of these Chaise Longue prototypes was sold to the Maharajah of Indore who used it in his palace with a mattress covered in leopard skin.

Base structure pained black, tubular element chrome-plated or painted.

Designed by architect Le Corbusier in 1928, this modern classic chaise is characterized by its clean lines and exposed structural elements. Comfort is assured by allowing the occupant a choice of positions. 

This is a lower, "lounge" version of the cantilever of 1926/27. It made its first appearance with the continuous roll and pleat cushion at the Berlin Building Exhibition (Berlin Bau-Ausstellung) in 1931. It was first produced in 1931 by the Bamberg Metallwerkstatten in Berlin. The upholstery solution is generally attributed to Mies's friend and close collaborator Lilly Reich.

In 1939, Noguchi designed an "articulated table" for A. Conger Goodyear who was then President of the New York Museum of Modern Art. This large biomorphic table carved in rosewood is now owned by the New York Institute of Technology of Old Westbury, New York. In his autobiography, Noguchi tells us that he gave a model of the articulated table to Robsjohn-Gibbings with whom he had planned to work on a mass produced version.

However, in 1945, while Noguchi was working as a volunteer in a relocation camp for Japanese Americans interned during World War II, Robsjohn-Gibbings published an anthropomorthic table which he had developed for the Widdicomb Furniture Company. Noguchi felt that Robsjhon-Gibbings had plagiarized his design. Noguchi began working on the design of this small, freeform table in 1944. It was put into production in the early 1950's. It is one of the most characteristic and best know examples of "mid-century-modern". 

Foremost a sculptor, Isamu Noguchi softened the edge of 20th century modernism with his satisfyingly organic furniture designs. His sought-after classic Free Form Sofa and Ottoman (1946) have been newly reissued by the Vitra Design Museum in partnership with the Isamu Noguchi Foundation. A statement-making piece, the sofa has a grandly scaled, open form that accommodates multiple people. The design is lightly padded and provides a firm seating surface for public spaces and formal living rooms. The ottoman nestles into the sofa’s curved form to function as a footrest, perch or table. Low, rounded beech wood legs lend a sense of animation. The upholstery colors each have coordinating legs: Black fabric with black painted legs; chartreuse fabric with walnut-stained legs; cream fabric with natural beech legs. The sofa and ottoman are part of a serial edition, and feature numbered plates of authenticity.

A seat that can be moved forward is the distinguishing feature of Andy, allowing converting the sofa to a chaise-lounge. This height-adjustable table from 1927 is one of Eileen Gray's most rational designs and reflects her desire for functional perfection. Originally conceived as a bedside table for the guest room in Gray’s famous E. 1027 house in Cap Martin (her sister was fond of breakfast in bed), it is also useful as a side table in living rooms, office reception areas or, (thanks to durable materials), on the terrace. Its purist aesthetic complements a wide range of furnishings and settings. Simple assembly required.

* Heavy collar used instead of thin collar as on promotional versions.
